In 2017, The Outlaws, a sleeper, unexpectedly became a smash. It was an action comedy with a good mix of humor and violence that was based on the actual tale of the Heuksapa Incident, a shootout between two rival gangs that took place in Seoul in 2007.

We now have the sequel, titled The Roundup, after the initial production timeline was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, the Korean title is The Outlaws 2, which is what it should have been for the English title as well to prevent any misunderstanding.

Given that it was based on a true tale, The Outlaws’ more extensive cast of protagonists and antagonists, who each received the ideal amount of screen time, certainly contributed to its lengthier running duration than the sequel. Yoon Kye Sang’s portrayal of Jang Chen was fantastic, and in the end, he received his just desserts.
The villains in The Roundup are less compelling this time around because of its shorter running time and the fact that it is based on a crime statistic rather than a true story (i.e., the number of Korean tourists who go missing abroad every year), and we only learn that they merely kidnap tourists in order to make money.
